How secure are the windows of your home? While most householders are careful about door security, it’s important to remember that windows are points of access to buildings that are often used by burglars. Hawaii home insurance may offer financial protection if your belongings are stolen but as part of your defense against break-ins you should consider improving window security.

How vulnerable are your windows to being targeted by burglars and intruders? Consider first the features of the windows.
•    How effective is the design of windows? Some styles of window, such as vertical sliding designs, are less secure than others such as fixed picture windows and skylights.
•    Is the glazing resistant to shattering?
•    Are the window sashes and frames in a good state of repair?
•    How effective are the window locks?

It’s important to consider the security of the area surrounding windows.
•    Can an intruder gain access to the window from the ground, the roof of a porch, a fence, balcony or fire escape?
•    Is the area around the window lit at night?
•    Are windows visible from the street or hidden from view by trees?

Other factors come into play when you are thinking about improving window security, including costs, the value of your possessions in your home and the level of crime in your neighborhood. Talk to your agent or insurer too if you are upgrading your window and door locks or installing other security devices – doing so may qualify you for a reduced rate on your Hawaii home insurance.
