A home designed for adult living may have many hidden dangers for children. It’s a good idea, if your home in Hawaii is not often visited by children, to look around your home for anything that might be a hazard. Although Hawaii home insurance may provide compensation if a guest is injured while visiting your home, we’re sure that you will want to do anything you can to avoid a mishap that might harm a child.

Survey the interior of your home for potential hazards.
• Adjust the thermostat of your water heater to keep it below 120 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce the risk of a child scalding themselves.
• Keep cleaning products out of reach of children.
• Store knives and other sharp implements where children cannot reach them.
• Use childproof locks on medicine cabinets.
• Eliminate dangling or hanging loops on curtains and blinds that could entangle and suffocate a toddler.

Out of doors can be dangerous for children, too.
• Keep sheds locked and store dangerous items such as tools and chemicals well out of reach of children.
• Use great caution when reversing in your driveway.
• Be vigilant about water safety. The hazards of in-ground pools are well known but remember that a child can drown in an inch or two of water in an inflatable pool.

Make your home, both indoors and outdoors, a place where children are safe. Making a Hawaii home insurance claim after an accident is not good enough; it’s essential to do whatever you can to eliminate hazards and prevent accidental injury!
